Founded in 1382, Winchester College contains
various ornamental gardens within its historic walls.
Not open to the public, these gardens are for
the enjoyment of pupils and dons only. Gardens
range from Meads with stately plane trees through
larger and smaller gardens to a tiny courtyard for
the students’ use alone. Our host for today will
be Head Gardener Alan Smith who will guide us
through the gardens followed by lunch served
in the New Hall which overlooks the Warden’s
These beautiful gardens consist of a series of
interesting spaces including the Warden’s Garden
with its large borders, a new herbaceous border
started in 2015, lawns and a woodland area.
Moberly Court features a formal quad in the centre
of the school with presentation lawns and simple
borders. Guests will also visit Chantry, one of the
oldest areas of the school and War Cloister, which
was built after WWI and is regarded as one of
the finest school war memorials, with lawns and
restrained planting. The gardens of the Art and
Music Schools and the Headmaster’s Garden will
also be visited.
