WHERE: Adel, Leeds, Yorkshire

An opportunity for a private visit to Perennial’s
garden at York Gate, with an introductory talk
given by Head Gardener Adam Bowley.
York Gate is a one-acre garden tucked away
behind the ancient church of St John the Baptist
in Adel, on the northern outskirts of Leeds. It was
created by the Spencer family between 1951 and
1994 before being bequeathed to Perennial so that
it could continue to live on and be enjoyed by the
garden-loving public.
When the Spencer family bought the property
it was a neglected piece of land adjoining a
farmhouse. Over the next 30 years they created
a garden which by the 1980s had come to be
recognised as one of the most innovative small
gardens in the UK.
York Gate is a garden of immense style and
craftsmanship. It is divided by yew and beech
hedges into a series of smaller gardens, each with
its own theme and style. From the formality of the
Herb Garden with its topiary to the Dell with its
half-hidden pathways and stream, every area
has an intimacy and charm of its own. Traditional
materials are used with extraordinary creativity and
invention. A succession of delightful vistas links the
different ‘rooms’ to create a feeling of continuity.
From pretty paths to pergolas, detailing throughout
is exquisite.
