About

Rarely open for tours, Biddulph Old Hall is a private home with an amazing history.

This 16th century mansion has a rich history of worship, once used as an Elizabethan safe house for secret Catholic worship, then in the sixties Biddulph became a sanctuary for Buddhist monks who came over from India. But it is the story of Pre-Raphaelite painter Robert Bateman who spent 16 years living virtually as a recluse here that inspired the idea of the garden. Owner Brian Vowles will lead our exclusive tour guiding guests through the fascinating history and inspiration behind this incredible restoration project that Brian and his late partner Nigel undertook. Shortly after Brian and Nigel’s architectural design company won Channel 4’s Grand Designs Award for Best Restoration in Shropshire in 2008, they bought Biddulph to restore it for themselves.

Guests will enjoy the romanticism of the grounds and enjoy key features like the magical White Garden hidden within the walls of the ruined manor which include white climbing roses ‘Madame Alfred Carrière’ and ‘Rambling Rector’; a Knot Garden created by Nigel and Brian as a nod to the late 15th century building beside it; a stunning rectangular reflecting pool and much more.

Guided tour with lunch.
