Perennial is the only UK charity dedicated to helping all horticulturists. Perennial offers free, confidential advice and support to everyone working in or retired from horticulture and their families, including gardeners, landscapers, nursery and garden centre staff, parks and grounds care staff and tree surgeons, for as long as it is needed.
People turn to Perennial for financial and emotional help in times of need because of disability, sickness, poverty, financial hardship and old age – although increasingly younger people are seeking assistance. Many individuals describe the services Perennial offers simply as a ‘lifeline’. The work of Perennial depends entirely on voluntary donations from the horticulture industry and the garden-loving public.
Anthony is one of hundreds of self-employed horticulturists Perennial helps each year. His journey, from chaos and uncertainty, to sanctuary and safety with Perennial’s support, is the message behind the Perennial Sanctuary Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2017.
When Anthony was made redundant, just before Christmas, from the landscaping firm he worked for his wife was expecting twins. Without another job to go to, he had no way of supporting the family and was desperate for help. Perennial was able to offer emergency grants and support him with benefits applications, ensuring the family stayed safe and warm over winter. With Perennial’s support Anthony has established his own business, now employing two young gardeners. He feels proud to have been able to give others the chance of employment and says he doesn’t know where he’d be now without Perennial’s help.
