Horticultural Trainee – York Gate Garden

Perennial Horticultural Trainee Programme

Train for a career as a professional Gardener at York Gate Garden (Leeds)

York Gate garden is commonly regarded as one of the finest examples of garden designs of its time. Once a private family garden it was donated to Perennial in 1994 and is now open to visitors five afternoons per week throughout the Spring and Summer. York Gate is a one acre garden, divided into a series of smaller ‘rooms’ with different themes and in contrasting styles. These include the Dell with half-hidden pathways and a stream, the famous herb garden with topiary and summerhouse, and a newer more contemporary garden with grasses and summer-flowering perennials. It is maintained to very high horticultural standards providing an exceptional learning opportunity for someone wishing to begin or continue a career in horticulture with an interest in historic and botanic gardens.

Trainees are taught and assessed as they work alongside and learn from our experienced gardens team including our inspirational Head Gardener Ben Preston. Ben is highly regarded in the industry and under his guidance it is a very exciting time at York Gate, as an expansion of this unique garden is underway with great opportunity for the trainee to be a part of this project. The placement is full-time and runs for 2 years.
