To develop Perennial’s Fellowship programme through stewardship and recruitment. To develop long term income for Perennial through legacy marketing and events

About the role

This is a full-time post to develop Perennial’s major donor supporters and prospects to inspire them and help them in their philanthropic journey with us. You will be a key contributor to the development of Perennial’s major donor programme through the successful recruitment and cultivation of new prospects alongside personally managing a portfolio of existing high level major donors.

You will lead on the development of a new Fellowship programme, stewarding existing Fellows and securing new ones. 

In addition, the role will focus on raising long term income for Perennial through legacy marketing and events.


Key relationships:

Internal – The post holder works closely with:

  • Chief Executive, Director of Fundraising and Marketing, Fundraising Manager, Senior Management Team and Trustees to ensure that all relationships are progressed by the most appropriate contact while retaining overall responsibility for our major supporter portfolio.
  • Colleagues in the Fundraising and Marketing directorate, including our Marketing and Communication functions

External – The post holder works closely with:

  • High Net Worth Individuals
  • Garden loving public with potential for legacy giving
  • Key influential individuals within the horticultural industry – employers, suppliers or membership bodies
  • Fundraising supporters, donors and volunteers
  • Colleagues across the fundraising sector


Key Tasks:

You will work with Perennial teams to::

  1. Develop the annual strategic plan for major donor fundraising and legacy marketing, utilising analysis and data to support your thinking.
  2. Develop relationships with existing and new major donors to raise long term income, including membership of the Fellowship, and legacies.
  3. Lead on the development of high quality events for potential major donors and increase the prospect pipeline
  4. Work with the Marketing team to create suitable marketing to promote legacies and attract HNWI for regular support, working with the team to ensure that these messages are also incorporated into all activities and marketing collateral as appropriate.
  5. Build and sustain a case for support which is clear and compelling, demonstrating an understanding of the challenges faced by our service users.
  6. Pro-actively identify and research donors, key supporters and potential legacy
  7. Build, develop and steward relationships with existing and potential donors and legacy pledgers through a proactive programme of events and activities, reporting and communications tailored to individual interests.



  • Work within efficient monitoring and recording systems, ensuring on-going analysis of performance and compliance with all regulatory bodies.
  • Log data and communications accurately on the Perennial fundraising database (ThankQ) – maintaining and creating records, updating information, and running reports as required.
  • Support PR activities
  • Participate in national marketing and fundraising initiatives
  • Play an active role in promoting the work of Perennial by participating in training courses, team and staff meetings as arranged, some of which may be residential.
  • Be a proactive member of the Marketing & Fundraising Team, both initiating projects and supporting the efforts of others.
  • Carry out any other duties that may be agreed from time to time which relate to marketing and fundraising activities.

Education & Experience

You will be an exceptional people manager and will create a culture of collaboration across the wider Team, working closely with colleagues from across the directorate.  You will be expected to work from the Leatherhead office 2-3 days a week, and as required for team meetings, management meetings.



  • Demonstrable experience of building relationships with donors and prospects to successfully raise philanthropic gifts and meet agreed targets (E)

NOTE: This job requires manual handling, for example cardboard boxes of stock, leaflets, deliveries, pull up banners, and similar materials for shows etc.

Staff are expected to work flexibly when the occasion arises and sometimes undertake tasks not specifically covered in their job description.

Evening and weekend will be required as part of this role. (Time off in lieu will be given)

Hours of work:          9-5pm, Monday to Friday with 1 hour unpaid for lunch, – plus some weekends and overnight stays where time in lieu is given.

Holidays:                    25 days per annum, plus bank holidays (with increases for long service)

Pension:                     Perennial operates an auto-enrolment pension scheme and will match employee contributions up to the statutory amount.  Details of the scheme will be available following a formal offer of employment.

Other:                         Sick Pay, Death in Service Benefit (3x salary).  Perennial has a number of well-established, family-friendly policies, including ‘buying’ extra (unpaid) leave, time off for dependents, variations to normal working hours.  Further details available on request. 

General Considerations: All Perennial jobs are subject to a probationary period (6 months) and a periodic review.

Smoking:                   In the interests of health and safety, Perennial operates a non-smoking policy on its premises and expects staff not to smoke in company vehicles.
