At the beginning of a new year, the annual Party for Perennial is a time for the industry to come together, cement relationships and celebrate successes. The event, which takes place on Thursday 18th January in London’s Soho, highlights the work of the only charity dedicated to helping everyone across the industry in times of need and launches the charity’s annual HortAid fundraising campaign. Tickets are still available to purchase to anyone that would like to attend.
Various businesses and suppliers to the industry have got behind the event as sponsors, showing their support for Perennial and making the most of it as a fun opportunity to come together with colleagues and friends. Here some of the sponsors give their thoughts on what 2018 holds for the industry and how Perennial plays a vital role in providing support for everyone working in horticulture and its associated fields.
Steven Walley, Managing Director of London Stone, headline sponsor for the event, said:
“We are moving into 2018 with the industry as close as it has ever been and communication between landscapers, designers, suppliers and all parts of the industry improving, which benefits us all. The more time we all spend together, the more chance we get to talk, share skills and contacts and improve our ways of working. This is why getting together at industry events is so important. The Party for Perennial in particular is a more relaxed opportunity to have fun and celebrate the industry and cement our business relationships in a sociable environment.
“From what I have seen across the industry, this should be a good year – everyone is busy and businesses are looking to take on more staff. While the atmosphere is generally upbeat, I think there are certain growing issues where Perennial will play a part in providing support. Mental health issues are increasing as the world changes and people feel under more pressure from modern life. This is something that can affect anyone and it is vital that we create a culture of looking out for each other. Perennial is a unique charity and it is so important to support its services so that we can all benefit from its help and protection if ever we find ourselves in a position to need it.”
Dominic Elsom, Marketing Director at Bulldog Tools commented:
“Bulldog Tools are looking forward to a fantastic 2018 with significant investment now complete in our manufacturing plant and our Wigan factory and distribution centre. The continued theme of Brexit seems to be causing some market uncertainty and the effects on low paid horticultural workers is still not clear – particularly with regards to how the UK horticultural industry will be affected. Although many areas of the horticultural industry create large profits, many workers within the sector still face low wages despite their long hours and in many cases impressive qualifications. Perennial’s hard work to support horticultural workers and their staff through the hard times is needed more than ever.
“Perennial is a fantastic charity with fantastic people, so we love supporting Party for Perennial. Events like this allow us to see old friends as well as meeting new ones and it gives us the opportunity to discuss issues within the industry with colleagues from other organisations.”
Jeremy Storey Walker of the Landscape Show said:
“With the start of 2018, the industry is already focused on future projects and ways to encourage fruitful collaborations moving forward. ‘Party for Perennial’ provides the perfect opportunity to catch up with others in similar positions. It provides the chance to talk through possibilities and probabilities with current customers and suppliers as well as the chance to meet new faces. We are delighted to be supporting Perennial for the third year in succession and the amazing work they do for the entire industry.”
This year’s Party for Perennial is more informal than in previous years, with tickets costing just £25 still available to buy. It takes place in the Flamingo Room at O’Neills in London’s West End and tickets include a glass of bubbly on arrival, as well as delicious food and live music until late.
All money raised through ticket sales and the raffle will help support all UK horticulturists and their families, who come to Perennial for help. As the only charity that helps individuals working in and retired from all sectors of the horticulture industry, Perennial is a lifeline for people that have nowhere else to turn.
Many thanks to the Party sponsors for making the event possible, in particular headline sponsor London Stone, as well as the HTA, the Landscape Show, Bulrush Horticulture and Bulldog Tools, and Horticulture Week as media partner.
