York Gate Arbour Restoration Appeal
We need your help to rebuild the historic arbour at York Gate Garden which is in desperate need of restoration.
This unique structure plays a defining part in the Arts and Crafts fabric of the garden. We urgently need £12,000 to renovate the arbour and continue the legacy of York Gate Garden. Your donation will help us bring it back to life and protect the heritage of York Gate for future generations.
Vital restoration
Sadly, the original wood and pillars have deteriorated over time leaving the structure unstable and in urgent need of replacement. Keeping to the spirit of the original garden designed by the Spencer Family, the arbour will be lovingly restored in 2025 with the expertise of local craftsmen. By donating now, you will be able to see the finished arbour in the garden next summer and be a part of this restoration journey.
Donate todayThe history of the arbour
The arbour was first built in the 1960s from wood that survived a fire at a chapel nearby. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement using local materials and traditional craftsmanship, it encourages visitors to slow down in a sheltered spot and appreciate the peacefulness of the Pinetum garden room. The Spencer Family designed and developed the garden until York Gate was entrusted to Perennial in 1994 and it is this legacy which remains at the heart of the garden. One of the reasons people return to York Gate is for the carefully created garden rooms, each offering a unique perspective and experience for the visitor.
