About Perennial

Perennial has a rich heritage of improving people’s lives. We help anyone who makes or looks after gardens, parks, sports grounds, woodlands and other green spaces. If someone work’s with plants, trees or grass, or work in the places where they grow, Perennial is their charity. Our friendly and experienced team helps individuals and families through life-changing events with free and confidential personal support, for as long as they need it.

We understand the personal challenges and financial pressures that might be faced by people who work in horticulture, arboriculture or forestry. We offer a lifeline, with practical and personal support designed around each person. We can visit at home or be just at the end of the telephone.

We help around 1,500 people and their families every year. Many people we help have been through a life-changing event, such as serious injury, long-term illness, losing a family member, redundancy or other problems at home. Others simply can’t afford to live on their regular wage and feel they have no choice but to borrow money to make ends meet. We can help, whatever the problem.

We are committed to a future in which all people in horticulture are aware of us, understand what help they can receive from us, and are confident to get in touch should they need our help.

How you can help make a difference

Our purpose is to ‘Build better futures for people in horticulture and their families’.  We believe that no one should be denied help simply because they are not aware of Perennial, so our vision is that everyone in horticulture will be aware of Perennial, understand what help they can receive from us, and will be confident to get in touch if they need us.

Apprentice Gardener – Fullers Mill

Fullers Mill Garden is an enchanting and tranquil waterside and woodland garden, situated on the banks of the River Lark at West Stow in Suffolk.  It combines a beautiful site of light dappled woodland with a fabulous collection of rare and unusual shrubs, perennials, lilies and marginal plants, collected over the course of 50 years by the creator of the garden Bernard Tickner MBE.

In 2013 the garden was gifted to Perennial, the only UK charity dedicated to helping all those who work in or are retired from horticulture, in times of need. Head Gardener Annie Dellbridge and her team of gardeners and volunteers now maintain the garden for the enjoyment of visitors from April to September. Apprentices are taught and assessed as they work alongside and learn from our experienced gardens team.

Overall Purpose

To learn and undertake a range of gardening tasks in the maintenance and care of Fullers Mill Garden, reliably and to a high standard.

The Role

You will undergo a practical work based professional apprenticeship under the guidance of the Head Gardener and other staff members. You will develop skills and knowledge in horticulture working alongside experienced gardeners and volunteers.

The NVQ Level 2 Work Based Apprenticeship is taught with the guidance of a tutor from Easton and Otley College who will set coursework so that you can achieve the required standards to obtain this qualification.

Volunteers: York Gate Garden Tea Room

York Gate Garden relies on the help of its team of volunteers when the garden is open to visitors. We are currently looking for help in the busy and popular tea room, particularly on Sundays.

This is a sociable role working with a very friendly team and involves a lot of face-to-face contact with visitors to the garden. It is ideal for those that enjoy gardens and want to give something back by supporting York Gate Garden and helping generate income for Perennial, the trade charity that looks after all horticulturists.
