Make a bigger impact by donating a major gift to Perennial. Your philanthropy will help to make a huge difference to the horticulturists we help, providing a lifeline when it is needed most to people in a range of employment, including gardeners, nursery staff, landscapers and tree surgeons, as well as their families and people retired from the industry.

There are many charities working in the areas of social welfare, debt relief and education who do outstanding work and make a huge difference for the people they help. Perennial is one of these, but what makes us unique is that we focus on helping horticulturists and their families when they need it most. Other charities such as Macmillan and StepChange signpost horticulturists to us, as they know that we will provide a high quality, holistic and professional service for our clients.

Our vision is to reach more horticulturists and their families all over the UK, to make sure they know we are there when they need us, and to provide support, advice and assistance during difficult times.

Why we need major gifts

When a problem occurs, we respond quickly and effectively to the needs of the individual concerned – at whatever time of life that need arises. There is no standard answer to a problem and our approach is one of identifying the best methods of support and getting them into place as soon as possible.

What really makes us special is that Perennial provides a service tailored to each client, and we will stay with that client until they no longer need us, even if that means we are helping them throughout their whole lifetime. In some circumstances we will help to resolve a client’s issues, but continue to offer support so if they face difficulties in the future, they are can return to us for further help.

Although expensive, this highly personal service is hugely valued by our clients. When they are going through turbulent and stressful times, rather than contacting a number of busy and faceless agencies who can only help with certain aspects of their problem, instead they meet with one. Our caseworker will visit the client, usually in their home, ensure all of their issues are understood, and help to resolve them. They build a relationship with their caseworker, so they don’t have to keep telling their story to a new person, and they get the support and help they need, while keeping paperwork and confusion to a minimum.

The support of our major donors means that we can be there for horticulturists when they need us most, and have the funds to continue helping until all of our client’s problems are resolved. The number of people we help is increasing every year, and significant gifts are vital in providing funds so we can continue to have the capacity to provide help in this way even with ever increasing numbers.

How will your gift make a difference

By giving a major gift, you are supporting Perennial’s highly trained, professional Caseworkers who provide a helping hand to our clients when it is needed most. Often cited as the most valuable support – a lifeline – our caseworkers provide the relief clients need to get through the dark moments and move into a brighter future.

Some examples of the difference your help could make are provided by the quotes from our clients below:

Due to tragic and terrible circumstances we found ourselves to be in, we did not have the strength or energy to help ourselves. Our caseworker helped us to claim the benefits to which we were entitled and this has enabled us to live and now concentrate on regaining our health – mental, physical and emotional. (Couple, 51 to 60 years of age, in ill health)

Debt management and help with negotiations and lenders. The help given made me feel that there was hope and a way forward for me and my children. I had started to suffer physically and mentally and Perennial’s help has enabled me to regain good health. (Man, 51 to 60 years of age, self-employed)

I personally had around ten years of struggling with debt from a previous relationship falling apart. With amazing help and support from Perennial a massive weight has been lifted and I still can’t believe it now. (Couple, 31 to 50 years of age, employed)

It made me aware that I was not alone in experiencing the difficulties I was in i.e. bad health leading to a drop in income leading to debt. My caseworker helped me to see the light at the end of the tunnel through giving me debt advice and retraining options and just being there to talk to. (Woman, 31 to 50 years of age, self-employed)

The number of people who we help each year continues to increase, but we know there are many people in the industry who do not know that we are there for them when they need us. Since 2015, we have seen a 2.5% increase in the total number of clients who came to us for help. We need to continue our work, not only by providing our services to everyone who works in horticulture, and their families, during difficult times, but also to spread the word and help horticulturists and their families know that we are there when they need us most.

In 2015, the sad news reached us that a retired gardener took his own life after changes to the benefit system left him owing £800 due to no fault of his own. He was left to tackle the difficult and sometimes unnavigable benefits system alone, with the worst possible consequences.

His story highlights that of many of our clients, and demonstrates the need for us to reach more people in horticulture, to make sure that they know we are there for them when times get tough, and that we can help when it is needed most.
