Today we will visit Brightling Down Farm, a private family home with an impressive award-winning hillside garden. Set in the Sussex High Weald, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) the garden boasts spectacular views and combines traditional and contemporary ideas with structure and form.
Head Gardener, Francesca Murrell, will be our guide today and escort us around this garden which will surprise guests at being only 20 years old! The design, by renowned garden designer team Acres Wild, shows great spatial sequences and embraces the extended landscape. The installation of various levels has been cleverly used, both formally and informally, to maximise the sequence of unfolding views.
This four-acre garden part of an 80-acre estate features several fascinating areas including a water garden, a Japanese garden, a woodland garden and a walled vegetable garden; and is sympathetically planted with a mix of small trees, shrubs and grasses bursting with colour and texture. It is surrounded by meadows and ancient woodland and is sympathetically managed to encourage as much biodiversity into the garden as possible, creating a wide range of habitats generating a haven for wildlife.
Picnic lunches will be provided to be enjoyed in the barn at the garden.
