The Grade 1-listed landscape at Plas Newydd in Llanddaniel Fab, Anglesey has an enchanting garden, woodland and parkland with stunning views of Snowdonia. Nestled on the shores of the Menai Strait, the mild conditions allow a wide range of plants to flourish, from rhododendrons and magnolias to rare southern hemisphere specimens in the Arboretum. The Italianate Terraces and Sunroom Courtyard are full of colour from Spring to Autumn, beginning with tulips at Easter, with dahlias and salvias bringing the borders’ year to a close in October.
Described as one of North Wales best kept secrets is the hidden world of Plas Cadnant Gardens in Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey. With a fascinating history that dates back to the early 19th Century, this garden had disappeared under a dense canopy of self-sown trees, cherry laurel and wild rhododendron. The Hidden Gardens were rediscovered, restored and developed into a plantsman’s paradise with year-round interest featuring the once lost Walled Garden and valley areas.
Crûg Farm Plants in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, is a Mecca for extraordinary plants. Located in one of the most beautiful areas of North Wales, the nursery has a small woodland and walled gardens. Its outstanding and unrivalled selection of plants was introduced into cultivation by the owners who are plant hunting professionals. The couple started the nursery more than 30 years ago and have been plant hunting every year ever since visiting the Far East, Middle East, South America and Asia.
Set within Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, Plas Brondanw in Llanfrothen, Gwynedd was the home of Clough Williams-Ellis and the garden was his creation. The Grade I listed garden was designed with formal structure and superb views of the surrounding mountain peaks. Inspired by renaissance Italy, its series of romantic garden rooms have strong architectural influence. Stone walls, topiary, pools, fountains and avenues of trees along with pieces of unusual art and sculptures and an eye-catching woodland walk.
Nestled between the Dwyryd estuary and the majestic Snowdonia mountains, Portmeirion Village in Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd is a wonder to behold. Created by Sir Clough Williams Ellis it has vistas in every direction and endless pathways to explore. Soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere in the village centre and the Riviera views. Wander through the Gwyllt with its acres of woodland and stumble upon hidden gems such as the Dog Cemetery and the Chinese lake and the exotic plants, ancient trees, and secret coves.
Brynbella in Tremeirchion, Denbighshire is a tranquil garden in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Vale of Clwyd with far reaching views across open countryside. With long borders, lawns and sculptures the seven-acre garden delights with a series of rooms and overlooks its 40 acre listed park. It comprises an award-winning gravel garden designed by Andy Sturgeon, a walled garden with orchard, rose garden, vegetable garden and glasshouses, a woodland garden, an Italian garden and a water garden.
The Laundry, a relatively new garden near Denbigh in Denbighshire is a wonderfully personal and relatable garden full of history and authenticity. It comprises a walled garden, dating back to 1770, and a series of rooms divided by old walls, with a collection of stories to match. There is a clever use throughout the garden of trained trees, including limes, planes and crab apples, to form structures of purpose and interest with a superb painterly approach to the overall planting.
