No Rain!

So… June already.
As if the time flying by isn’t bad enough, here at Fullers Mill Garden like so many other parts of the country, we are desperate for Rain!
Due to the absence of precipitation, coupled with the unusually high temperatures for this time of year, the gardens are full of an array of premature colour particularly from our irises which have been tricked into flowering three to four weeks earlier than normal.
So please do hurry along to see and marvel at their beauty and maybe even pick up some very reasonably priced specimens at the same time.
Now although the early displays are always welcome, the other issues this dry weather can bring is the accelerated going over of said flowers.
We are also seeing signs of stunted growth already, due to the lack of energy in our alliums, Cardiocrinum and lilies (to name but a few), following a fairly dry winter. So please don’t be alarmed if you are experiencing the same.
Like many others, we too are staring at our dusty-bottomed water butts as they have now been relegated to mere garden ornaments until a much-needed deluge. But if you do have other means of watering or irrigation, try not to over water, and try to stick to those that need it the most, as we want the roots to dive down to search for the water, not lazily loiter just under the surface where they will soon dry out again as quick as it takes you to water them!
This same method can be used for pots as well for the same reasons: we want the roots to go down and strengthen to give you a happier and healthier plant.
As we all know very well, our British weather can turn on a sixpence, so please do take full advantage and get out there to one or all of the Perennial gardens. If you come soon to Fullers Mill Garden, you will see our aforementioned irises, you will hopefully catch a glimpse of our Cercis (Judas trees), and you will see some amazing acers glowing as they are backlit by the sun.
Our wedding cake tree (Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’) looks amazing as always but is now also in full bloom! You may catch the end of the first flush of flowers on our wisteria tree and experience the intoxicating scent plus many more horticultural delights.
So just like myself, this article is short and sweet. All I have left to say is, thank you and hope to see you in our gardens soon.
