York Gate Events
York Gate Snowdrop Week | 15 -20 February 2022 | 9am-4pm (last garden entry 2.30pm)
Head Gardener, Ben Preston tells us more about this wonderful event.
Snowdrop week is back in February and we are delighted to welcome you back to the garden this winter. As I am a little bit of a galanthophile myself, we have been working hard on our Snowdrop collection over the past few years.
Many are now dotted through the garden and join our wonderful collection of Galanthus S. Arnott, Sybil’s favourite. We have around 60 varieties and cultivars, The White Garden is now home to a significant collection of the Greatorex Doubles, and we have a few prized yellow snowdrops, my favourite being Wendy’s Gold, my mother’s namesake, nodding quietly in the fern border.
Although snowdrops are the star of the show at this time of year, the garden has so much more to offer. Firstly, the amazing backbone and design that the Spencer’s sculpted over decades. The yew hedges and topiary are tightly clipped and at their architectural best. The distractions of summer have been cut back by the frost, leaving the timeless hard landscaping to be admired. Circular mill stones, reclaimed cobble paths and ancient york stone paving shows off the garden’s foundations.
Other winter flowering gems are also on show. Swathes of winter aconites in the orchard are complimented by crocus and cyclamen. It really is the beginning of the gardening calendar, I hope you can join us.
Our café and gift shop will be open all week and our plant nursery will all be open with a selection of snowdrops and late flowering bulbs for you to take home.
